Celebrate Safely: 4th of July Tips for Families
The 4th of July means BBQs, parades, waves of red, white and blue—and of course, fireworks. It’s a wonderful time to create memories with your little ones. But fireworks and holiday excitement also bring important safety considerations. At KareamaKids 2 in Mount Holly, NJ, we’re dedicated to keeping our kids and families safe while enjoying the festivities. Here’s how we can all celebrate responsibly, together.
🎆 1. Leave Fireworks to the Pros
Every year, thousands of children suffer serious fireworks-related injuries—burns, hand injuries, eye trauma, and hearing damage are all too common.
Instead of lighting fireworks at home, view a professional display at least 500 feet away from the launch site. This helps prevent injuries and protects young ears from loud noise.
🔥 2. Skip Sparklers—They’re Not Harmless
Surprising as it may sound, nearly half of fireworks injuries in kids under 5 come from sparklers.
These burn at around 2,000 °F—hot enough to melt metal—and can ignite clothing instantly, or lead to serious hand and eye burns.
Avoid giving sparklers to children—even hand-held sparklers pose serious risk.
📏 3. Keep a Safe Viewing Distance
Viewing from a distance keeps families safe from debris, sparks, and loud blasts. Plus, it helps protect young ears from permanent damage.
Remind children to stay close and hold hands, especially in crowded viewing areas.
🌳 4. Mind Environmental and Wildfire Risks
Local displays may be canceled during dry weather or wildfire season. Alternatives like laser or drone shows can provide the same wow-factor with fewer risks.
Always check air quality alerts and local safety advisories before heading out.
🚒 5. Teach Kids to Stay Back from Duds
Never pick up unexploded fireworks—these “duds” can still ignite unexpectedly.
Teach kids to immediately tell an adult and call emergency services rather than touching or walking near them.
🛡️ 6. Be Prepared—First Aid and Fire Safety
Pack a basic first aid kit with burn gel, cool packs, adhesive bandages, and sterile gauze.
Keep your fire extinguisher nearby and have a watering source ready—backyard festivities can be unpredictable.
👂 7. Prioritize Hearing Protection
Fireworks blasts can exceed 150 decibels, far louder than safe listening levels for young ears.
Consider giving toddlers ear protection, or plan to step away between loud bursts to rest hearing.
