Safe Summer Fun Routines
Summer is Here! Safe and Fun Routines for the Little Ones at KareamaKids 2
The summer sun is shining bright, and here at KareamaKids 2 in Mount Holly, NJ, we’re excited to enjoy all the outdoor fun the season has to offer! While summer is a wonderful time for play and exploration, it also brings unique safety considerations for our youngest learners. That’s why it’s important to establish summer routines that keep children safe, cool, and happy while they enjoy the warm weather.
Here are some tips and routines we follow (and recommend for home too!) to make the most of summertime while keeping little ones protected:
1. Sun Safety First
Protecting young skin from the sun is a top priority. Before heading outside, we make sure every child is wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. We reapply throughout the day, especially after water play or sweating. Hats and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts can also help provide extra protection from harmful UV rays.
Tip for Parents: Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going outside and consider UV-protective clothing for added sun safety.
2. Hydration is a Must
Active little bodies need to stay hydrated! We encourage children to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially during outdoor play. We offer water breaks often and keep cool water bottles easily accessible to remind kids to sip frequently.
Tip for Parents: Pack a refillable water bottle for your child and model regular hydration by drinking water alongside them.
3. Cool and Comfy Clothing
Choosing the right clothing helps kids stay comfortable during summer fun. We recommend light-colored, breathable fabrics that help regulate body temperature. Don’t forget a sunhat to shade their faces and sunglasses to protect their eyes!
Tip for Parents: Dress your child in cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics and avoid dark or heavy materials.
4. Safe Outdoor Play
Outdoor activities are a big part of summer at KareamaKids 2. We make sure all play areas are safe, shaded when possible, and free from hazards. Playtime is often scheduled earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day. We also check playground equipment to ensure it isn’t too hot to touch.
Tip for Parents: Be mindful of outdoor surfaces that can heat up quickly, like slides or metal bars, and plan outdoor time for cooler parts of the day.
5. Water Play with Care
Splashing around is one of the best ways to beat the heat! Whether it’s sprinklers, splash pads, or kiddie pools, we always supervise water play closely. Safety rules are taught and reviewed often to ensure everyone has fun safely.
Tip for Parents: Never leave children unattended near water and teach simple water safety rules like walking instead of running near wet areas.
6. Quiet Time and Rest
With all the excitement summer brings, quiet time is essential. We schedule rest periods in cool, shaded indoor areas to help little ones recharge and avoid overheating. Calming activities like story time or quiet music help them relax.
Tip for Parents: Make sure your child gets plenty of downtime, especially after outdoor play. A cool, quiet space is perfect for recharging.
A Happy, Healthy Summer Starts with Routine
At KareamaKids 2, we know that summer is all about making memories, exploring the outdoors, and having fun with friends. By sticking to safe and consistent routines, we ensure that every child enjoys the season to the fullest while staying healthy and protected.
